Data Acquisition

Data Acquisition – A Technique Or A Gift To Humanity

Data Acquisition

Do you know what data acquisition is? Are you aware of the data acquisition techniques? Most of the people are confused on the concept of data acquisition. Some think that it is just about storing information or data and others believe that it just converts the real life information into computer format. Data acquisition is a wide concept, which includes control systems that helps to store real world signals or data into a computer and figure out ways by which we can retrieve the information when required. When we talk of real world signals, it is not only confined to specific signals. Real world signal refers to the variety of signals that can be intercepted by the devices such as sensors, instruments etc. to be stored in the memory. For every type of signal, a special mechanism or technique needs to be followed. Data acquisition is also known as DAQ or DAS as it involves processing the signals for information or data.

To accomplish the task of data acquisition we need to deploy certain data acquisition techniques for specific signals. For signals that are generated from devices or instruments such as voltage signals, we use analog to digital converter to convert the signals into digital signals that can then be processed using data acquisition. Voltage signals are analyzed based on the amplitude, frequency and duration of the signal. If the signal is a current signal then we use transducer measurement technique to record the signal. Similarly, for strain gauge bridges, we use strain measurement and for encoders we use angular position measurement techniques. Whereas for digital signals it is very easy as we have to consider only two states, that is, on or off state.

Once the data is acquired, it is displayed to the user, analyzed for its performance and then stored on a computer or a storage device. This is done with the help of software developed in any of the computer programming language. Some data acquisition also concentrates on the use of graphical display to ease the process of understanding and monitoring of data. Data acquisition is proficient in dealing with data such as change in temperature of a room, pressure of a gas cylinder etc. and can measure all of such properties.

Data acquisition uses transducers to measure such properties of the real world entities and convert the data into digital signals for processing by the computer. Various types of compatible transducers are hence used in different applications that help to intercept the data in a better way.
